From their earliest days as motorists, people learn how important it is to come to a full stop at red lights. However, some still don’t get the message, which only contributes to high auto insurance costs and accidents around the country.

Earlier this month, public safety officials marked National Stop on Red Week with an eye on reminding motorists that safe driving depends on stopping at red lights.

In its own announcement, the National Safety Council (NSC) suggested that people who are distracted while talking on cell phones may be especially prone to running through red lights.

Specifically, the NSC noted that many distracted drivers can experience inattention blindness, where they can miss up to 50 percent of the information in their immediate environment – including stop signs and red lights.

“Our brains aren’t designed to perform two cognitively complex tasks at the same time, such as driving while having a cell phone conversation,” said NSC president Janet Froetscher. With these things in mind, people who take the time to obey basic traffic signals will often benefit from a cleaner driving record and lower auto insurance rates over time.
