Towers Watson, a professional services company based in New York, is acquiring Extend Health, which operates the largest private Medicare exchange in the U.S., as it seeks to expand its retirement services offerings.
Towers Watson will pay $435 million for the San Mateo, Calif., company, with which it formed a strategic alliance in August 2011.
“We believe that this combination of two market leaders will provide innovative, best-in-class health care solutions that combine specialized retiree medical transition consulting with the choice and cost advantages of individual Medicare plans purchased on a private exchange,” the company said in a statement.

Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. has agreed to pay $10,000 to settle a case where current and former customers personal information was made public in November 2009.
Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen, who negotiated the deal with Connecticut Consumer Protection Commissioner William Rubenstein, said in a statement that MetLife “acted voluntarily” to correct “the mistake of its employee and to protect its customers.”

Auto insurance company Progressive contributed to the Mega Millions lottery frenzy March 30 with a mega-giveaway.
As the multistate Mega Millions jackpot catapulted toward a record-breaking $640 million, Progressive advertising character The Messenger was handing out 1,937 Mega Millions tickets in New Orleans French quarter. The Messenger bought the tickets at a convenience store in suburban Metairie.
The company gave away the 1,937 tickets in honor of its 75th anniversary.
